LAST UPDATED 26 SEPTEMBER 2026 · APPLIES TO LOOPBOARD 1.0.0

ON THIS PAGE+

LoopBoard itself is closed source. It is built on open source software made by other people, and our thanks go to everyone who maintains it. The FFmpeg command-line program (ffmpeg.exe) bundled with LoopBoard is licensed under the GPL. yt-dlp itself is released under the Unlicense, but some components packaged inside its executable are licensed under the GPL or LGPL. How to obtain the source code for both is explained in the FFmpeg and yt-dlp sections below.

What changed on 26 September 2026. This page now applies to LoopBoard 1.0. The component table lists the exact versions shipped with it. .loopboard files are now written with yazl instead of adm-zip, which LoopBoard no longer includes.

FFmpeg

LoopBoard bundles a copy of FFmpeg, which does all of its video and audio processing. FFmpeg is a separate program, not part of LoopBoard, and LoopBoard runs it as an external process.

The command-line build (ffmpeg.exe) is licensed under the GNU General Public License, version 3. This is the build LoopBoard uses for encoding, thumbnails, trimming and cropping. It is GPL v3 because it includes GPL-licensed components, notably libx264, the H.264 encoder LoopBoard uses to produce playback proxies.

Source code offer

The complete corresponding source code for the FFmpeg binary distributed with LoopBoard is the FFmpeg source at the commit linked above. The exact build configuration used to produce it is reproduced in the file ffmpeg.exe.README, which ships inside every LoopBoard installation at:

<install folder>\resources\app.asar.unpacked\node_modules\ffmpeg-static\

That folder also contains ffmpeg.exe.LICENSE, the full GPL v3 text as distributed with the binary.

Written offer. In addition, for as long as we distribute this binary and for at least three years after we stop, we will provide the complete corresponding source code for this exact FFmpeg build to anyone who asks, at no charge beyond the cost of delivery. Write to source@theloopboard.com. This offer is valid for anyone who receives a copy of the software.

The playback library (ffmpeg.dll) is Electron’s own FFmpeg build, used for media playback inside the application window. It is licensed under the GNU Lesser General Public License, version 2.1, and is distributed as a separate dynamic library that can be replaced independently of LoopBoard. Its source is available from the Chromium project.

yt-dlp

LoopBoard bundles yt-dlp to download video and audio from links you provide. Like FFmpeg, it is a separate program that LoopBoard runs as an external process. yt-dlp itself is released into the public domain under the Unlicense.

The yt-dlp executable is built with PyInstaller and contains 45 third-party components with their own licences, including Python (PSF-2.0), OpenSSL, curl, SQLite, certifi (MPL-2.0), GNU Readline (GPL-3.0-or-later), mutagen (GPL-2.0-or-later), libidn2 and libunistring (LGPL-3.0-or-later), and libstdc++/libgcc (GPL-3.0 with GCC Runtime Library Exception).

Their complete licence texts are on a separate page: yt-dlp third-party licences.

Source code for these components is available from the original projects. The yt-dlp maintainers additionally undertake to supply it on request at maintainers@yt-dlp.org, as stated in the notice shipped with the binary. Requests may also be sent to source@theloopboard.com and we will supply what we hold or pass the request on.

Electron and Chromium

LoopBoard is built with Electron, which embeds Chromium and Node.js. Electron is MIT licensed; its licence text ships inside every installation as LICENSE.electron.txt, in the folder alongside LoopBoard.exe.

Chromium is licensed under BSD-3-Clause together with the licences of several hundred further components. The complete credits file ships inside every installation as LICENSES.chromium.html and is also published here: Chromium credits.

Licence texts inside the application

Every LoopBoard installation carries the licence texts for the components that require them. Relative to the folder containing LoopBoard.exe:

LICENSE.electron.txtElectron, MIT
LICENSES.chromium.htmlChromium and its bundled components, including the full LGPL v2.1 text covering the FFmpeg library used for playback

resources\app.asar.unpacked\node_modules\better-sqlite3\LICENSEbetter-sqlite3, MIT

Licence texts for the remaining packages ship alongside those packages inside the application archive.

Microsoft Store copies. If you installed LoopBoard from the Microsoft Store, the same files are inside the app folder of its installation under C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\, which Windows protects from being opened directly. The licence texts above are also published on this page and its linked pages, and the written offer for FFmpeg source code applies to Microsoft Store copies in exactly the same way.

Notices

We have tried to credit every component correctly and completely. If you believe something is missing, misattributed or wrongly licensed, please tell us at contact@theloopboard.com and we will correct it.

If you are the author of a bundled component and require a change to how it is credited, write to the same address and we will act on it promptly.
